Book Overview

Growing Up With Modern Bhutan is an account of the life and career of Kunzang Wangdi who grew up in remote Ura village in Central Bhutan. It talks about his early life in 1960s, his schooling and college education through 1970s and1980s. The events covered are those that transpire from the time the decision of the Third King to modernize the Kingdom with modern education and connectivity through from India with the generosity of people and Government of India at a time when China occupied Tibet to today when His Majesty the People’s King pronounced the Royal Vision of transformation of the Gelephug the area known to the author as a child as Hathi Sa to that of The GMC - The SAR. The book therefore attempts to illustrate through the eyes and personal happenings in his life tells the story of how Bhutan grew up, as many returned from studies from schools and colleges in Bhutan and abroad. It talks about 1980s when the country was more or less manned by non-nationals. It tells us how the deep-rooted fronting and monopolistic trading practices were dismantled and entrepreneurship and skill development being promoted. Efforts and initiatives of professionalization of civil service through management education and capitalization of ICT and internet connectivity were undertaken. The RAA as a member of the world auditing family took up the challenges of culturing integrity and accountability. Through planned auditing and value for money and performance audits. Severe lapses detected were prosecuted and “zero tolerance” was introduced. New laws were drafted to meet the changing needs of the nation. With the pronouncement to transition the nation into democratic constitutional monarchy, electoral administration took advantages of the success stories and best practices to build a dynamic and vibrant election administration system. It was historic that the new Election Commission of Bhutan could play a very critical role in the formation of FEMBoSA the regional electoral association and the A_WEB the Global electoral management association for the first time. It is more or less a story of the organizations and places and events where the author was directly or indirectly associated with which he had related at an extempore talk at the RIM Eminent Speaker’s Series and transcribed as effort to share the tales to a wider audience in the form of this book. The author hopes that it would be of some use to readers.
