Book Overview

In the heart of Bhutan’s mystical Gangtey Valley, Bum Sangwa Kuengi Yonten & Dungshing Chukpoi Drung Drung unfolds a timeless tale of love, destiny, and unyielding resilience. Born in secrecy(Sangwa) and blessed with divine wisdom (Yonten), Sangwa’s hidden existence collides with Drung Drung, a spirited herder bound by legacy and loss. Their forbidden romance, set against the vibrant tapestry of Bhutanese folklore—sacred monasteries, thunderous festivals, and whispered legends—faces trials beyond the mortal realm. As tragedy strikes, Sangwa’s journey transforms into a spiritual odyssey, weaving vengeance, devotion, and enlightenment. Gaseb Nima Dorji, acclaimed for Ruebi Nyaka Phushey and Athang Tenzin Pem, resurrects a forgotten medieval ballad, blending oral traditions with haunting prose. A saga of loyalty and sacrifice, this is Bhutan’s answer to epic love—ethereal, raw, and unforgettable. Discover a love that defies even death from the seasoned author who tells story in an un-matching fluency and vigor.

What began as a friend’s insistent recommendation transformed into an unexpected literary pilgrimage. This book བུམོ་ གསང་བ་ཀུན་ གྱི་་ཡོན་ཏན། pulled me in so completely that I found myself reading through one seating. Unlike other non-fictional books I’ve read, this one felt different. This isn’t merely another story; it’s a timeless exploration of love, destiny, and the extraordinary resilience embodied by Drung Drung and Sangwa Kuengi Yonten. Their journey transcends the pages, becoming something deeply personal and profoundly moving.Though I wasn’t born in Shar (Wangdue Phodrang), this place raised me, educated me, and fundamentally shaped who I am today. Reading this book felt like coming home in the most unexpected way, especially the names that are typically associated with Shar( Aum Lham, Ap Drawu, Golay, Kumbu, Aum Passang …ah what a feeling!). Every places and plots mentioned in the book now makes perfect sense to me. One of the things that I can associate is; I vividly remember my mother calling me Dheum Khanmo every time I cried, and now I finally understand why she used that term 😁. At the time, I never questioned it—but now, through this book, I understand the reason behind that affectionate nickname lol. The author’s descriptive mastery doesn’t just paint pictures; it creates an atmosphere so tangible you can feel the mountain air and hear the whisper of prayer flags in the wind. #folktale_wangdue_gangtey_bhutan
